Driftwood sketches by Dr. Jana Kopelent Rehak

This work engages with the psychologies of living on a remote Eastern Shore island. The wind-beaten grounds of the island were kind enough to become an anchor for, among other things, my outsiderhood in America. Wild grasses hold the land against erosion, salt eats away at the trees, and whatever remains grows. The spectators are old-time islanders who identify as descendants of early English settlers, travelers, and artists.

Driftwood was made possible by the Jim Burger Senior Thesis Project Award.
